Year 7 girls' rugby team train with World Cup winner Marlie Packer!

Posted on: 27/02/2020

The Under 15 Girls’ Rugby Team dug deep to secure a second win of the season to maintain their 100% record.

A strong start, characterised by a marauding run and subsequent try by Lyra saw Blenheim take an early lead following an intensive warm-up which was led by Saracens and England World-Cup Winner Marlie Packer. Marlie came down to offer support and guidance to the team after seeing Chloe’s story, that helped to establish the team, shared on England Rugby’s social media accounts in recent weeks.

Despite an electric first 10 minutes, Blenheim seemed to step off the gas and found themselves conceding tries as often as they scored them - in quick succession!

Late in the game, Blenheim found themselves 15-20 down and facing defeat. However, a quick water break allowed the more senior members of the squad to rally the troops and deliver a dramatic finish to see Blenheim over the line. Featuring some impressive ball carrying and Barbarians-style quick offloading, Blenheim’s high-intensity game plan saw them level the game at 20-20 with just minutes to spare before finally bundling over the winner. The referee initially disallowed the try, stating the ball was held up, before a second attempt was ruled out for an illegal ‘tap and go’ that had to be retaken.

Ultimately, this was of little significance as Erin crashed over the try line from a 5 metre penalty with ease at the second time of asking to cap off a fantastic occasion in front of a world cup winner.

Esher High, ever persistent in their approach, nearly scored at the death to salvage a draw, but Blenheim were stoic in defence and able to turn the ball over deep in their own half and subsequently end the game with a narrow 25-20 victory against well-organised opposition. 7

Congratulations to Try scorers; Freya, Ava, Erin and Lyra (x2). A big well done also to Erin who was awarded Player of the Match.

An excellent performance all round, well done girls!
