Chelsea FC Blenheim U19 Girls

AFC Bournemouth

Wednesday’s game saw the academy start a run of five competitive matches in three weeks starting against an AFC Bournemouth side who we narrowly beat at the start of the season 1-0.

The weather for this match was the complete reverse of that fixture with temperatures soaring and not a cloud in the sky. It was Blenheim who started the brightest and after 7 minutes Kori finished well after some great work to beat two players and break into the box. The Blenheim girls had put themselves in a great position, but could not capitalise and 6 minutes later it was 1-1 after a composed finish from the Bournemouth striker. The game then became scrappy with neither side able to get a grip of the conditions or opposition. Blenheim looked menacing in the wide areas, with Amie and Kori beating their respective full backs with ease, but the ball would not drop for a Blenheim strike on goal. It was AFC Bournemouth who took the lead from the penalty spot after a great save from Blenheim’s right back! The penalty was duly slotted home, and it was Blenheim who trailed at the break.

With Blenheim 2-1 down, a big push was needed to get the score line back in Blenheim’s favour. AFC Bournemouth set up to defend and catch Blenheim on the counterattack. The second half played out with several missed chances. Lara, Hannah and Leia dealt with AFC Bournemouth’s threat well, but Blenheim could not find the equaliser.

With time ticking away Blenheim changed to a back 3 and Freya made her debut, having joined the team this week after her year 11 lessons had finished before half term. It was Freya who scored the equaliser after some good play from Cassie and Amie. Freya showed a poacher’s instinct to hunt down that ball in the 6-yard box and poke the ball home with 8 minutes left. There was not to be a final comeback, with the result leaving Blenheim 2nd in the league and welcoming table topping Barking Abbey this Friday. Congratulations to Lara who was awarded Player of the Match.
