Surrey Parent Handbook –

A guide for Parents & Carers of 12 - 18 year olds

This is a resource from Surrey Family Information Service (FIS), part of the Early Years and Childcare Service.

The handy sized reference book is aimed at parents and carers of the age group in the title, specifically for parents of Year 7 children.

Parents can either call the Contact Centre at Surrey County Council to request a copy of the handbook, or visit one of the larger libraries in Surrey to pick up a copy from a dispenser.

Following on from last year’s very successful programme of short ICT courses, we are delighted to offer a further set of courses throughout the coming year.  These are open to all members of the school and local community.

 

  

Internet Safety

The internet is a wonderful resource that can encourage young and old alike to explore, learn, interact, create and contribute but, as in everyday life, there are some simple guidelines that will help you gain the most benefit and avoid potential pitfalls.

 

Ø      Find out how you and your family can get the most out of the world wide web;

Ø      Learn how to be safe online;

Ø      Gain information on how to avoid viruses;

Ø      Teach children about the dangers to look out for;

Ø      Discover what software is available to aid parental control on computers.

You will learn how to use Microsoft Word 2003 and Excel 2003 to:

 

Ø      Create and maintain a table of addresses in Excel;

Ø      Generate address labels using Word (mail merge);

Ø      Save all information so that you can use it time and time again.

 

 

Come to the course armed with your address book

and leave with a full set of address labels for your Christmas cards!

When you are using the web to gather information, don't be duped by what you

find out there.  Learn the basic guidelines for evaluating information on the web.

 

Ø      Is everything you see on the web reliable?

Ø      Are some web addresses more reliable than others?

Ø      Are the links from a website always good links?

Ø      What is the difference between .com, .net, .ac, .mil etc?

 

All this and more will be answered on our Web Literacy course.

‘Basic Word – The Useful Bits!’ will teach you how to use Microsoft Word 2003 to create professional looking documents for both business and personal use.

 

On completion of this course you will be able to:

 

Ø      Open and move around a word document

Ø      Format and layout text on a page

Ø      Structure documents

Ø      Create and edit tables

Ø      Import graphics and other objects

Ø      Print documents

Ø      Save documents

Budgeting in Excel & Other Basics

On completion of this course you will be able to:

 

Ø      Create a workbook including text, values and dates;

Ø      Format a worksheet;

Ø      Create simple calculations, including Sum, Average etc;

Ø      Print and Save workbooks;

Ø      Run a budget for home use.

All courses will be held in school in one of our computer suites; the courses run over one, two or three weeks, depending on the topic, and each session lasts two hours.  Tuition is free of charge and will be delivered by an external ICT trainer.  We ask for a contribution of £5.00 per person towards the cost of refreshments (£2 for the one week courses), payable when a booking is made.
