Today, the Year 7 rugby team played Hinchley Wood in their very first rugby game. Hinchley Wood won the toss and chose to receive the ball first. #teamblenheim started strong and in just a few minutes, they had turned the ball over and were driving up the pitch! The team moved as one unit, up the field and around Hinchley Wood’s defenders to score the first try! From kick off again Blenheim sprinted up the pitch and flew in to Hinchley Wood’s props. Another successful turn over in a well fought tackle led Blenheim to gain another try! Being two tries to nil down seemed to spark Hinchley Wood in to life. They were clearly a well drilled team and with some quick handling down the pitch, Hinchley Wood had scored a try back. After a very tough and gritty first half, both teams went back to their try lines, muddy and bruised and with Blenheim up five tries to three!

The second half began with a deep kick towards Blenheim’s try line. A quick interception by Hinchley Wood had the score five trys to four. Hinchley Wood had come back after half time with force and soon levelled the game 5-5. The second half was gruelling and challenging, a very tough game for both sides. Blenheim’s team played excellently and with their teamwork and tenacity, the team scored some brilliant tries, had some amazing ball carries and overall, played some fantastic rugby. The match ended nine tries to eight to Hinchley Wood, but that score does not reflect the brilliant performances of both teams.

Some special mentions to;

  • Sam E, George C and Luca A for some amazing ball carries.
  • Josh B and Billy T for some quick footwork and turns of speed to carry the ball over the try line.
  • Tom B, Dylan J and Toby M for some excellent tackles and brilliant defence.
  • Ethan F for his brilliant knowledge of the game and his leadership qualities.
  • Dan D who stepped in at the last minute (10 minutes before the game started) with borrowed trainers and ran out with the team. Dan is not usually in the rugby team but Dan scored a try and had some brilliant ball carries and executed some great tackles.

A big thank you to Mr Lee Kim, whose consistent teaching and enthusiasm has crafted a great Year 7 team from scratch.

Player of the match was awarded to Tom B. Tom completed the most successful and effective tackles in the match, stopping try scoring opportunities on several occasions. Tom showed resilience, respect and teamwork throughout the whole match and thoroughly deserves Player of the Match.

The year 7 rugby team has done amazingly well. They train with such high intensity and determination which helped produce a great performance. Well done to the Year 7 rugby team!
