Barking Abbey

3 Blenheim High School

Blenheim drew last year’s National Champions, Barking Abbey, in this year’s National Cup first round.

With two high quality squads it was an enthralling game for the neutral, with chances created at both ends and some outstanding football being played by both sides. It was #teamblenheim who took the lead after eight minutes with a trademark Megan finish after finding herself one on one with the goalkeeper.

Barking Abbey replied ten minutes later with a quality finish from distance that just evaded the grasp of #teamblenheim’s Lara in goal. Blenheim took back the lead just before half time through Megan, again after great football from Caitlin in midfield.

Barking Abbey responded twice in eight minutes at the start of the second half to take the lead for the first time in the game but for the next thirty minutes it was #teamblenheim who stepped up the pressure and looked most likely to score again, and score they did. After an outstanding through ball by Leia, Megan produced a confident finish to take the game to extra time.

Having been the better team for much of the second half, it was #teamblenheim who started the extra time brightly but, against the run of play, Barking Abbey scored a good goal on the counter attack, the game was decided two minutes later as again Barking Abbey broke and scored the last of their five goals. In what was a good #teamblenheim performance, this felt like the one that got away.

Congratulations to Megan who was awarded Player of the Match.
