International Women's Day at Blenheim

Posted on: 08/03/2021

Monday 8th March marked International Women’s Day, a day to recognise the contributions of women both today and in History. The day was marked in several subjects across the school and the highlights are below.

History

For Year 8 history students, this was something many felt strongly about having recently studied Women’s suffrage in their History lessons. Students in Year 8 spent last term looking at both the Suffragettes and Suffragist movements that campaigned for women’s votes. During these lessons there were fantastic discussions about equality and debates about the different approaches that were used to achieve the vote in 1918. As part of this, Year 8 also got to look at an important event in local history by examining the death of Emily Wilding Davison at the Epsom Derby in 1913. Students became History detectives, examining the evidence to try and decide whether Emily Davison was a martyr or whether it was a tragic accident. It was great to bring History to life by learning about its connections to our local community. At the end of this topic, some students created posters in support of the women’s suffrage movement where they tried to persuade others that women should have the vote. This resulted in some fantastic pieces of work being produced. Hopefully, Year 8 enjoyed learning about this topic as much as the History department enjoyed teaching it.

Health and Fitness

International Women’s Day was also celebrated in Health and Fitness lessons. The following photos show students’ work from Years 7, 8 and 11 who have produced posters of their sporting role models, to celebrate women athletes and applaud when equality is achieved in pay, sponsorship and visibility.
