Big Numeracy Question

Posted on: 24/03/2021

This half term, students from all Key Stages have been getting creative with their numeracy skills for Blenheim’s Big Numeracy Question challenge. The challenge presents a question to students that is linked to another subject area, and is designed to develop students’ problem solving skills and get them thinking about different ways to present their working. There are no right answers to the Big Numeracy Question; the questions are fun and students are encouraged to think more about how they articulate their answer, rather than the answer itself.

This half term’s question, posed by the Graphics department was; “If you sharpened a full pencil down to the end and it was one continuous sharpening, how long would the sharpening be?”

There were some fantastic entries, making it difficult for the Maths Department to choose a winner. After much debate, the winner of Blenheim’s first Big Numeracy Question challenge is Skylah in Year 8. Skylah’s entry showed her numerical thinking clearly, including the typical size of a pencil and use of estimation. Congratulations to Skylah who will receive a £25 Amazon voucher for her winning entry.

The second Big Numeracy question will be released after the Easter break with a deadline for entries of Friday 14th May so watch this space for another chance to win a £25 Amazon voucher.
