Year 7 Basketball Tournament

Posted on: 28/02/2022

On Thursday Seven Year 7 Students represented Blenheim High School at an interschool Basketball Tournament.

Our first game was against St Andrew’s School. St Andrew’s were very quick out of the blocks and raced into a 6-0 lead. Blenheim however regrouped quickly and weathered the attack of St Andrew’s to make it a more even contest. Blenheim were rewarded and pulled back a score to make the score 6-2. Our joy was short lived however and we were suddenly 8-2 down with no time remaining on the clock.

Blenheim were unable to reflect on this loss as we were straight back on court, this time against Ashcombe school. Again, Blenheim were in a tight contest with very little separating the two schools, though some excellent attacking work and stern defence meant that Blenheim navigated the contest and achieved a 6-4 win, our first of the day.

Blenheim’s third game saw them up against Three Rivers, a school which Blenheim has competed against previously. Blenheim started off on the front foot and never looked back. Our free-flowing attack and strong defence meant that Three Rivers were unable to register a score, whilst Blenheim were ruthless in attack registering 10 points, the game finishing 10-0 in favour of Blenheim.

The final fixture of the day put Blenheim against a very familiar opposition, Epsom and Ewell. Both schools had friends on each side, though these friendships were put aside for this contest. Blenheim started off well and were moving the ball quickly around the court, looking for an opening. Credit must be given to Epsom and Ewell as they were steadfast in their defending. Openings for both sides were few and far between though it was Epsom and Ewell who scored first. This did turn the momentum towards Epsom and Ewell with Blenheim remaining compact in defence and fluid in attack. Blenheim were rewarded for their attacking effort and pulled the score back to level the scores at 2-2. The game swung back and forth but in the dying seconds of the game Blenheim managed to put together an attack that succeeded in scoring to go 4-2 up, which won them the contest.

The Year 7 team should be immensely proud of themselves, they all played magnificently with a good attitude and spirit, winning three out of four games.
