Review of non-examined assessments (GCSE and A Levels)

Blenheim High School is committed to ensuring that where coursework is assessed internally, this is undertaken fairly, consistently and in accordance with the awarding body’s specification and subject specific guidance.

Candidates’ work is marked by the teacher(s) who have the appropriate knowledge, understanding and skill, and who have experience in marking the assessments, and have access to the awarding body exemplar marking guidance. Blenheim High School is committed to ensuring that work produced by candidates is authenticated in line with the requirements of the awarding body. Where more than one teacher is involved in marking candidates’ work, internal moderation and standardisation will ensure consistency of the centre’s marking.

Blenheim High School will ensure:

  1. Candidates are informed of their centre assessed marks by 21st April so that candidates can review the mark awarded prior to the marks being submitted to the awarding body.
  2. Students are aware they will need to outline on what ground(s) they wish to request a review of an internally assessed mark as a review will only focus on the work submitted meeting the published awarding body criteria.
  3. Candidates will be provided with the marks awarded for the relevant non-examined assessments to support any future appeal, and will be directed to the specification mark scheme to review the mark awarded.
  4. Candidates have the opportunity to request copies of material (generally as a minimum, a copy of their marked assessment material (work) and the mark scheme or assessment criteria plus additional materials which may vary from subject to subject) to assist them in considering whether to request a review of the centre’s marking of the assessment.
  5. Candidates are aware that the original submitted NEA materials cannot be accessed, unless under supervision.
  6. Candidates have sufficient time in order to review copies of materials and reach a decision. Candidates will be informed that if they decide to request a review they will need to explain what they believe to be the issue.
  7. Clear guidance and deadlines are set out to submit a request for a review of the centre’s marking. Requests must be received by 28th April, and must be made in writing using the Internal Appeals Form (see page 4)
  8. Any appeal relating to the marking of NEA materials will be conducted within 3 working days of the appeal window being closed.
  9. The review of marking is conducted by an assessor (teacher) who has appropriate competence, has had no previous involvement in the assessment of that candidate, and has no personal interest in the review.
  10. The reviewer assesses the submitted NEA materials against the awarding body criteria and in line with the centre’s marking.
  11. The candidate will be informed in writing of the outcome of the review of the centre’s marking on the 3rd May.
  12. The outcome of the review of the centre’s marking will be made known to the head of centre, and will be logged as a formal appeal. A written record of the marking review will be made, including the score awarded. The appeal conducted will report if a NEA grade has remained the same, increased or decreased.

After candidates work has been internally assessed, moderated and verified, the NEA scores are submitted to the awarding body. The external moderation process may lead to mark changes. This process is outside the control of Blenheim High School, and is not part of the NEA appeals procedures.
