Curriculum Intent
The Economics curriculum enables students to develop an interest in and enthusiasm for the academic study of Economics and to exploit opportunities to enrich their learning through the application of economic theory to the real world. The A Level qualification is suitable for students who have an interest in understanding how economies work, how economic decisions are made and how these decisions affect individuals, businesses and society. The course provides students with the opportunity to develop a broad and detailed understanding of both microeconomic and macroeconomic issues.
Whilst having studied GCSE Economics is advantageous, the A Level curriculum is designed to be accessible to students who have not previously studied Economics. Students are encouraged to develop an understanding of key economic concepts and theories and apply these to current economic events and issues.
The key themes studied at A Level include:
- Markets and Market Failure
- The UK Economy – Performance and Policies
- Business Behaviour and the Labour Market
- A Global Perspective
Whilst Economics is broadly delivered through these key themes, students are encouraged to develop their synoptic thinking by making connections between different areas of the course. They are expected to use economic theory, data and evidence to analyse issues, evaluate different perspectives and reach well-reasoned judgements. These skills enable students to access the higher grades in their A Level examinations and provide them with valuable skills for further study and the world beyond education.
The Aims of the Department
The Economics department at Blenheim aims to provide students with the opportunity to develop a thorough understanding of economic theory and apply it to real-world economic issues at a local, national and global level. Students will explore how markets operate, why governments intervene in the economy and the impact of economic policies and decisions on individuals, businesses and wider society.
Students are encouraged to question economic assumptions, consider different perspectives and use evidence and data to form balanced and informed judgements. They will develop their ability to analyse economic problems, evaluate possible solutions and communicate their ideas clearly and effectively.
A Level Economics is delivered through engaging and stimulating lessons, with an emphasis on applying economic concepts to current affairs and real-world events. This helps students to understand the relevance of Economics beyond the classroom and develop the analytical, evaluative and critical-thinking skills needed to progress and achieve their potential.
A Level Economics
We are all affected by the economic decisions made by governments, firms, and consumers, both locally and globally. This course enables students to understand how and why these decisions are made, and the consequences they have for individuals and societies. Students will investigate a range of issues, from how markets allocate resources efficiently to the global challenges of inequality, unemployment, and climate change.
The following themes (and more) will be studied across the two years:
- Supply and demand in competitive markets
- Market failure and government intervention
- Measuring economic performance (growth, inflation, unemployment, trade)
- Fiscal and monetary policy
- Globalisation and international trade
- Development economics and inequality
- Behavioural economics and alternative viewpoints
- The role of labour markets and business behaviour
