Model United Nations

Posted on: 28/02/2023

On Tuesday year 12 debaters visited Gordon’s School in Woking to take part in a Model United Nations session. Blenheim students were paired with year 12 Gordon’s students and each pair represented a different country sitting on the Human Rights Council of the UN.

A resolution concerning LGBTQ+ rights was proposed by the pair representing the USA to the rest of the countries. Students could then research the policies of their country to equip themselves for debate.

Countries were called to speak in favour of the motion and in opposition. Amendments were suggested and voted on. Finally, the resolution was voted on. The terminology and procedures used mirrored those which are used in the UN.

It was an excellent opportunity to engage in an academic debate in a formal style, to learn more about the UN and about the views of different countries. It was also a great opportunity to meet with other intellectually curious students and work collaboratively.

I was thoroughly impressed with the way our students engaged. They were excellent ambassadors for Blenheim.
