Reading Interventions in the Book-Nook
Mrs. Watson, our librarian and reading teacher, brings a wealth of experience from both the primary and secondary sectors. She provides tailored literacy lessons designed to support pupils who need extra help, ensuring they develop the skills and confidence to succeed in their reading.
Literacy Lessons
Literacy lessons will be held in the library with students’ regular English teacher once every half term for Years 7 and 8. For other year groups, these sessions will take place occasionally throughout the year, depending on need and availability.
Subject Scholarship
The library is categorised by subject as well as genre. Each subject has a collection of fiction and non-fiction texts to develop their learning across all subjects of the curriculum.
Library Ambassadors
We are excited to welcome two new Library Ambassadors from each tutor group this year. We are looking for students who are passionate about books, helpful to others, and have a positive and enthusiastic attitude. Library Ambassadors play an important role in promoting a love of reading within their tutor group. They will share library news and updates, encourage others to enjoy reading, and help their classmates use and respect the library space.
On their tutor group’s library day, ambassadors will assist during a lunchtime and break, approximately once each half term. In return for their commitment, Library Ambassadors will enjoy a range of rewards, including privileged access to the library throughout the year, a special pin badge, and the opportunity to earn House Points. The role is also a valuable addition to UCAS applications and the Duke of Edinburgh Award, as well as offering the chance to take part in exciting trips and events.
Book Clubs
Mrs Watson’s Blenheim Book Club meets every Friday lunch time in the library and reads texts more suitable for Years 7, 8 and 9. Miss Green’s Literature Society meets on Wednesday lunch times and reads text more suitable for Years 10, 11, 12, and 13.
Supporting Reading at Home
Reading regularly is one of the most effective ways to boost your child’s learning and confidence. We encourage all students to read for at least 20 minutes each day. Please take some time to listen to your child read and talk with them about the books they are enjoying. You might also ask if they have visited the school library recently and explore what new books they’ve discovered.
If you have any books at home that are no longer needed, we would be grateful for any donations to help grow and refresh our school library collection. Your support makes a real difference in fostering a love of reading across our school community.
We look forward to welcoming every Blenheim student into the library!
