UK Mathematics Trust Challenge

Posted on: 22/02/2023

The UKMT Intermediate Mathematical Challenge is a 60-minute, multiple-choice Challenge. This week, Blenheim's strongest Mathematicians from Years 8-11 took part. The challenge encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems.

The problems on the Intermediate Mathematical Challenge are designed to make students think. The UKMT’s biggest competitions are the Junior, Intermediate and Senior Mathematical Challenges, which have over 700 000 entries each year, and are the UK's most popular school Mathematical Challenges.

The UKMT invite the highest-scoring students to take part in follow-on rounds such as the Junior, Grey, Pink and Senior Kangaroos and the Junior, Cayley, Hamilton and Maclaurin Olympiads. The intermediate Maths challenge is a 60 minute rigorous set of problems and from 178 participants at Blenheim, 52 students have been successful gaining a Bronze Certificate, 19 students a Silver and 3 a Gold certificate, brilliant!

This year we have three students that have qualified into the next round two (James and Angelo) are taking part in the Pink kangaroo and Olly shall be taking part in the Cayley Olympiad a phenomenal achievement, congratulations!

We are excited to see how the Year 8 students take part next year as the challenge is designed for Year 9 and above, well done to those that qualified to take part and gained a certificate! Most importantly, well done to all those who participated, it has given you a taste of the challenge and how you can improve for next year. Year 7 and 8 will be entered for the Junior Maths Challenge where we will be hoping to extend our success.
