Blenheim High School

3 Portsmouth FC

In the third game of the league season, the #teamblenheim Chelsea FC Girls’ football academy welcomed Portsmouth FC to Blenheim.

There is no better way to start a game than an early goal and after just two minutes and eleven seconds that is exactly what #teamblenheim got, after some great work form Amie her shot was parried, and Kori was there to support with a well-timed finish at the back post. For the next 15 minutes, #teamblenheim girls held their own but Portsmouth gradually edged their way into the game, stopping the academy girls from creating any clear cut chances, whilst also starting to create their own. With twenty-six minutes gone, Portsmouth scored their first goal, and on the twenty-seventh minute they took the lead, the first time the #teamblenheim girls have been behind in a match this year.

But in true Blenheim style, the girls rolled up their sleeves and dug deep, pushing forward for an equaliser before half time and with two minutes left of the half, Megan finished off a great team move from close range, the girls went in to the break at 2-2, which was a fair reflection of the first half.

The second half started much like the first, with #teamblenheim girls applying good early pressure. After some great play from midfield, Blenheim won a corner and like the first, scored with just two minutes gone. Saskia struck high into the net after a good knock down form Amelie. Against the run of play Portsmouth scored from a long ball from their own half; the striker bought the ball under control and struck the shot very well to bring the scores back level at 3-3.

Having been pegged back again, #teamblenheim could have easily felt sorry for themselves and given up but unfazed by the leveller, they pushed forward with positivity and aggression. With Kori’s crossing ability causing all sorts of problems for the Portsmouth back line, it was Chinwendu who put #teamblenheim back in front with a perfectly timed finish. Kori provided her second assist two minutes later with Cassie finishing another great team move. Megan rounded off the scoring with an exceptional goal with three minutes left, controlling the ball well and dipping the ball under the cross bar from 25 yards. Congratulations to Kori who was awarded Player of the Match.
