House Music Competition

Posted on: 04/02/2022

The annual House Music Competition took place with a range of students across the school competing to entertain the audience and to earn points for their respective House.

The competition was split into two categories, with each House entering a Group performance as well as a Solo performance.

The Octavius Group performance kickstarted proceedings with a storming rendition of Journey’s ‘Don’t Stop Believin’, led by Cameron playing the piano and the roaring sound of Ben on lead guitar, co-vocalists Isolde and Suzy harmonised to perfection to set the tone for what was a fantastic evening of performances.

Tulyar then took to the stage with a quaint and pitch-perfect rendition of Cyndi Lauper’s ‘True Colours’, popularised by the ‘Trolls’ film, featuring Katie, Florence, Jessica and Malin as vocalists with as Florence on the piano, Emily on the Ukulele and Amy on guitar.

The third performance came courtesy of Nashwan who performed a stripped-back version of Conan Gray’s ‘Heather’ with Logan’s vocals backed by acoustic guitar playing and impressive harmonies from Imogen.

The final Group performance was a duet with Amy on the piano, flanked by Poppy who brought real emotion to the room with her stunning performance of Christina Perri’s ‘A Thousand Years’.

Moving into the Solo performances, Isolde’s flute performance of Telemann’s ‘Minuet’ showcased both her outstanding flute playing and breathing technique as she performed this complex piece of music, unaccompanied.

Alayna, of Year 11, treated the audience to a brilliant performance of Hans Zimmer’s ‘Interstellar Theme’ on the piano, playing an impressive rhythm to follow the unique and fluctuating time signature of the piece.

Year 10 student James really stole the show with a flawless rendition of Mozart’s ‘Rondo Alla Turca’ on the piano. He followed the scales up and down the keys with admirable speed and accuracy, and hit every note of what is an immensely difficult piece of music.

To conclude proceedings Ellie of Year 11, performed a vocal Solo of Lewis Capaldi’s ‘Bruises’, showcasing an impressive vocal range and delivering the lyrics with real emotion and vigour.

All in all, a fantastic evening of entertainment of which all the participants can be proud. However, there can only be one winner.
