Year 8 Boys Basketball Tournament

Posted on: 07/03/2023

This week, the Year 8 Basketball team attended their second Basketball tournament at Esher High School.

The team were buoyed by their previous success in the last tournament, coming first. Blenheim’s first game was against the host, Esher Church School. In the last tournament, Esher inflicted Blenheim’s only defeat, Blenheim were keen to make sure that this didn’t happen again. The game began and Blenheim started brightly with them dominating play and forcing Esher into their own half of the court, this eventually paid off with Eddie securing two quick baskets and winning a free throw. Blenheim were 5-0 up at half term. During half time it was discussed between the team that they needed to use the width of the court to continue their success. This paid off straight away in the second half as LJ received the ball wide and immediately shot, securing another two points for Blenheim. Blenheim continued to dominate and before the end of the match, Eddie was able to secure another two points with the game finishing 9-0 to Blenheim.

Blenheim’s second game of the afternoon came up against Epsom and Ewell High School. At the start Blenheim again exerted their authority on the game with Eddie and Ollie securing points throughout the first half. Just before the end of the first half Adam, who had defended superbly in both this game and the first, unfortunately injured himself. This disrupted the flow of the game and resulted in Epsom and Ewell securing a basket which put the half time score at 8-2 in Blenheim’s favour. Onto the second half and Blenheim started as they had done at the beginning of the game and secured additional points through Ollie and Teoman. Blenheim and Epsom and Ewell both had opportunities to secure additional points in the second half however did not. The second game finished 14-2 to Blenheim.

Blenheim’s final game was against Ashcombe. To become champions Blenheim had to win this game, their destiny was in their own hands. Perhaps the nervousness of this got to Blenheim as they started off poorly with Ashcombe scoring at regular intervals to go 6-0 up. Blenheim did start to play their way after with scores from Eddie, Ollie and Teoman to go 10-8 up at half time. After a team talk and a refocus Blenheim hit top gear with further scores from Teoman, Eddie and Ollie pushing Blenheim out to a 24-8 lead with Ashcombe only manging to score one basket in the second half. As the full-time whistle blew, Blenheim had done it, they had become North East Surrey Schools' Basketball Champions.

The entire team played brilliantly throughout both tournaments and as before I cannot simply pick a player of the Tournament, it will therefore go to them all!

Well done to Oliver, Eddie, Lewis, Teoman, Omar, LJ, Adam and Sam.
