Year 7 Girls Basketball Tournament

Posted on: 06/03/2023

The Year 7 Girls' Basketball team participated in the Surrey Schools' Basketball tournament at George Abbott School in Guildford. This was the first competitive basketball game each girl had played in outside of their weekly club. After a defeat in Blenheim's first game against George Abbott (the overall tournament winners) the girls were very quick to take on advice and make improvements in the remaining games. The biggest and most noticeable improvement was in Blenheim's defensive strategy and fast transitions up the court. This kept the girls right in the next two games, unfortunately losing both by a small margin to George Abbott B and Woking A. However, the girls really hit their stride and fell into a comfortable rhythm in the fourth match against Woking B, winning convincingly 12 – 0, with thanks to some excellent shots from Amy and Ruby.

Blenheim played Chessington in their fifth and final match. This was the most physical match of the day, which caught the girls off guard initially and fatigue started to kick in. Blenheim fought back with some excellent fast breaks by Betsy, but were unlucky to be defeated 14-8 in the final match.

Blenheim finished the tournament in fifth place, which was a massive achievement given their lack of experience. It has been such a pleasure coaching this team and I am really excited to see them grow and develop their skills both on and off the court in the future.

Well done to Ruby, Lydia, Melissa, Michaia, Elyssia, Betsy, Ava–Mae, Amy, Annabelle and Mia.

Thank you to Miss Tibble for driving the bus and assisting with coaching!
