Epsom College Politics Lecture

Posted on: 27/02/2024

Year 12 and 13 Politics students were invited to Epsom College on Tuesday to hear a lecture by

Professor Tim Bale from Queen Mary University. He spoke on the topic of whether the

Conservatives would win the next election and outlined the various factors which would influence

their chances.

Students from a variety of local schools were there and the Q & A session following the talk

covered a range of topics. Two Blenheim students asked interesting questions. One was about

the role of leaders in determining election outcomes and the other was about the chances of the

Green Party in a 2024 election.

Despite making the point several times that prediction is ‘a mug’s game’ Professor Bale was

happy to share his predictions and his reasoning which was based on his extensive expertise. The

discussion about salient issues, party factions, the role of the media and the influence of current

events related directly to our A Level syllabus and more generally it helped us all to feel more

informed and provided considerable food for thought during this election year.
