Cressida Cowell, the much-loved author of the How to Train Your Dragon series and Children’s

Laureate from 2019 to 2022, visited Waterstones Bookshop in Kingston on Friday 17 th

October

where our librarian and several Blenheim students had the exciting opportunity to meet her.

Cressida spoke about her own experiences as a child, explaining that she often found it difficult to

sit still but discovered that books could keep her imagination active and inspired. She shared her

love for fantasy and adventure stories, particularly Howl’s Moving Castle, which sparked her

creativity growing up.

Her advice for aspiring authors was simple but powerful: read as much as you can—because

reading fuels imagination and ideas. She also spoke passionately about the importance of adults

reading with children and young people, noting that a child’s intelligence often surpasses their

current reading level.

A highlight of the visit was when Cressida met Alana in 7NE, who proudly shared her own

handwritten and illustrated graphic novel. Cressida was delighted and deeply impressed by

Alana’s creativity and talent!
