Visit from Helen Maguire for Parliament Week

Posted on: 26/11/2025

As part of Parliament Week 2025 we were honoured to have Helen Maguire, MP for Epsom and

Ewell, visit us to discuss what life is like as a Member of Parliament. Students from Year 12

Politics, and the Model United Nations Co-Curricular Club joined her and listened intently as she

recounted her personal journey from a Captain in the Armed Forces to Member of Parliament.

She spoke passionately about the NHS linking to her role as ‘Primary Care and Cancer

Spokesperson’, the military and the situation in Ukraine, violence against women and girls,

transportation in Epsom and Ewell, the police and education with a focus on SEND.

Following her talk, there was a Q&A session. The students were incredibly engaged and posed a

variety of insightful questions to Helen, such as ‘What do you think the most prevalent problems

that young people face today?’ and ‘As a female MP, do you think that in today’s parliament, your

voice is just as important as a man’s?’. Helen’s answers were thoughtful and gave the students an

insight to what it is like to be an MP and the pressures they face to balance the demands of

representing their constituency with the demands of Parliament.
