BLENHEIM HIGH SCHOOL 1 - 3 ESHER HIGH SCHOOL

Blenheim welcomed Esher High School for a league fixture on a sunny spring afternoon this week. For the first time this term, the boys were able to play on a grass pitch in the evening without floodlights - a novelty which we have greatly enjoyed in training.

The team kept a wingback system that looked to press the opposition forwards and push them back towards the half way line, all while seeking to give Blenheim's midfield players the option to distribute the ball wide high up the pitch. Prince was handed a debut after impressing in training up front, while Finn held the defence together in a back three.

Blenheim got off to a flying start with bundles of energy and impetus that earned Blenheim several chances early on in the half. Joy came from Mikey and Tom spreading the play wide from midfield to the likes of Prince and Josh who would then seek out Kyren in a central forward role. The boys tested the Esher keeper early on with strong shots to the corner of the goal, with Prince in particular showing why he had been handed a debut start. The highlight came in the form of Finn rising at a corner, only to head theball against the woodwork.

This felt like a turning point in the match. Esher then stepped up and scored on the break with a lucky deflection away from a helpless Ethan in goal. A real shame considering the efforts shown by the boys early on in the half, but Blenheim didn’t make the most of their chances. However, the team showed fantastic resilience at the close of the half and won a penalty through Josh, who was brought down in thebox from a heavy challenge. Finn calmly stepped up and slotted the ball low into the corner, sending the keeper the wrong way. 1-1 at the break.

The second half was similar to the first, with Blenheim dominating possession of the ball but unable to convert chances to gain the lead. As the game pushed towards the end, Esher scored twice in quick succession on the counter attack. Another difficult result to take for the Year 9 team who had worked so hard and created numerous chances but ultimately had nothing to show from this match.

Nevertheless, the boys enjoyed the match and will be ready to go again next week.
