Sir John Scarlett - from Epsom to Moscow and back

Posted on: 15/05/2024

On Tuesday 14th May, A Level History and Politics students attended a lecture at Epsom College entitled: Sir John Scarlett - Epsom to Moscow and Back.

Sir John was a pupil at Epsom College and is a former head of MI6 and the Joint Intelligence Committee. He first joined the intelligence services in1971 and served until 2009. He spoke about his career experiences including two postings in Moscow either side of the collapse of the USSR. He also spoke about the history of the organisation and the special intelligence relationship between the UK and the USA.

It was fascinating to hear his perspectives on and experiences of the Cold War and of current affairs. Students posed some great questions including asking him to describe his ‘most James Bond moments’ and to describe how to get a job at MI6!

This was our fifth invitation to the Epsom College lecture series and we are very pleased to have been included and heard such a diverse range of fascinating speakers. It represents a fantastic Co-curricular experience for Blenheim students.
