Year 9 Kew Gardens Trip
Posted on: 03/02/2026105 eager Year 9 students set off to Kew Gardens this week, marking the culmination of a half
term’s work on The Living World, with a major focus on tropical rainforests. The trip was designed
to bring classroom theory to life and deepen pupils’ understanding through first-hand
experience.
Students spent the day exploring the four main sections of the Kew estate, moving from
greenhouse to greenhouse. Highlights included the Treetop Canopy Walkway and the popular
Orchid Festival. Each year, Kew creates a special display in the climate-controlled Princess of
Wales Conservatory, celebrating its global scientific work and emphasising the vital importance of
plant conservation.
The 2026 Orchid Festival transforms the glasshouse into a vibrant showcase inspired by China’s
rich biodiversity, cultural heritage and design traditions. Visitors can wander among dazzling
orchids, dragons, lanterns and striking floral sculptures, bringing to life the beauty and wildlife of
one of the world’s most biodiverse countries.
Throughout the day, students engaged with a structured booklet to stay on task and apply the
knowledge they have developed throughout the term. As the photos show, it was a fabulous day
out: pupils were highly engaged, behaviour was exemplary, and the students thoroughly enjoyed
the experience.
