Model United Nations at Gordon's School

Posted on: 04/03/2026

The United Nations was founded after World War II as an organisation where all the world’s nations can discuss and debate the pressing issues of the day, with the intention to find solutions in the interests of the global community.

In Model United Nations, students debate current affairs, while representing different nations. This is a stimulating academic activity as students are often arguing from the viewpoint of a country whose stance might be different from their personal view. They develop excellent skills in research, presentation and debate which equips them for the world of further study and of work. At a conference many different schools are represented and students have an excellent opportunity to collaborate with others and debate against them.

Blenheim High School was represented by 15 students at GMUN 26. We were split into three delegations representing China, Brazil and Saudi Arabia. The weekend opened with a fascinating address by Surrey Heath MP Al Pinkerton. Before the 2024 election he was associate professor of Geopolitics at Royal Holloway, University of London. He was able to contextualise the events unfolding in the Middle East and responded to students’ questions. Throughout Saturday, students debated in committees and the day ended with a casino night and disco. On Sunday, debate in committees continued and the day finished with a meeting of the General Assembly.

The closing ceremony and awards ended the conference. We were delighted that four Blenheim students won awards for their contributions this weekend. Congratulations to Joseph, Ben, Aleksander and Edward who were all given the award of ‘Highly Commended Delegate’.

All of our delegation made a fantastic contribution. We are so proud of all of them as they demonstrated excellent academic skills when researching, forming arguments and engaging with debate. These are complex and challenging topics to grapple with. They confidently worked with students from other schools, drawn from different year groups and in doing so they developed valuable team work and networking skills.
